In communities across the country, the practice of medicine depends on leadership, collaboration, and trust. Behind many of those efforts is a growing national observance that continues to bring physicians and healthcare professionals together around a shared purpose.
National Physicians Week, observed each year from March 25 through March 31, recognizes the physicians who guide patient care and the healthcare teams who support that work every day.
The initiative was founded by Dr. Kimberly F. Jackson, a family physician serving the Chattahoochee Valley and CEO of the physician led nonprofit Physicians Working Together. Her vision was simple but powerful. Medicine moves forward when physicians lead with purpose and when experienced professionals help prepare the next generation to take their place.

Over time, that vision grew into a national observance dedicated to recognizing physician leadership while strengthening mentorship across the profession.
The observance was officially granted recognition by the National Day Calendar in 2015, with the first national celebration taking place in March 2016. What began as a focused effort to highlight physician leadership has continued to grow as healthcare organizations, institutions, and communities join the effort each year.
The theme for this year’s observance, Unity in Healthcare, reflects the reality of modern medicine. Physicians guide clinical decision making, but strong patient outcomes depend on coordinated teams working together.

Nurses, radiologic technologists, therapists, laboratory professionals, and many other specialists contribute their expertise every day to support patient care. When those teams operate with shared purpose and strong leadership, healthcare systems become stronger for the communities they serve.
“Healthcare is strongest when the entire system works together,” said Dr. Jackson. “Physicians lead these teams, but the care we deliver depends on collaboration across the healthcare field. Every professional who contributes to patient care plays an important role in serving our communities.”

Through the work of Physicians Working Together, the observance also places strong emphasis on mentorship. Experienced physicians are encouraged to guide and support medical students who will one day carry the responsibility of patient care forward.
As healthcare continues to evolve, the mission behind National Physicians Week remains clear. Strong physician leadership, supported by unified healthcare teams, helps ensure that communities receive the quality care they deserve.
Each year, National Physicians Week offers an opportunity for healthcare professionals, institutions, and communities to pause and recognize the physicians whose dedication continues to shape the future of medicine.
Physicians Working Together continues its work year round by supporting physician leadership, connecting medical students with mentors, and building programs that strengthen the future of healthcare.
